NATIONAL HEADQUARTERS 4350 E. Camelback Road, Building F250 Phoenix, Arizona 85018 1-800-4-A-CHILD www.Childhelp.org FOCUS ON PREVENTION: They say it takes a village to raise a child. The fact is, sometimes it takes a village to save a child. Childhelp Speak Up Be Safe is the nation’s only research-based prevention education program that engages pre-K—12 students and their communities in the fight against child abuse. By giving children the tools they need to identify supportive adults and recognize and report unsafe situations or abusive behaviors, we increase disclosure rates and improve students’ ability to identify unsafe situations before they become victims. Thanks to a new partnership with Arizona State University (ASU), we are gearing up to have an even greater positive impact on child abuse prevention nationwide. Through Fall 2018, ASU and Childhelp are working together to determine evidence-based effectiveness of the program and translate findings into action. “Our goal as we work alongside Childhelp is to create and enhance the Childhelp Speak Up Be Safe curriculum to be truly unique and impactful,” said Wendy Wolfersteig, Ph.D., director of evaluation and partner contracts at ASU’s Southwest Interdisciplinary Research Center (SIRC). Childhelp Speak Up Be Safe has the power to stop abuse and save lives. Our ultimate goal is to expand the program to every school in America. And with a cost of just $5 per child to deliver the program, we know exactly what level of funding is needed to make this dream a reality. Right now, more than 125,000 children nationwide are waiting for Childhelp Speak Up Be Safe to be implemented in their schools. Your ongoing support can help ensure that these students — and hopefully millions more — get a chance to participate in a prevention curriculum that has already saved hundreds of children from abuse. Childhelp Speak Up Be Safe Redesign — Three-year Overview (Fall 2015-Fall 2018) Year 1: ASU reviewed and assisted Childhelp in aligning expanded curriculum to cover Pre-K through 12th grades. Facilitator training modules were also expanded. Year 2: Dr. Wolfersteig and her team will run a pilot study in four elementary schools and one high school in the Phoenix area. Year 3: The redesigned program will be tested via controlled trial to determine evidence-based effectiveness.
