It’s Time for the Winners The Chieftain reveals picks for this year’s Oscars By Trevor Tosto Chieftain Staff It’s time to play the music. It’s time to light the lights. It’s time to predict the Oscar Show tonight. Yes, the 2018 Oscar list dropped and, boy, is there some big controversy. I’m about to run through my personal picks in the top categories. Get ready because I’m about to unleash my inner millennial “blogger.” First up, let’s start small: Original Score: This is about to be John Wil- liams’ one millionth Oscar. Hands Down. “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” caused an earth- quake in the Star Wars fan base, but all can agree that this soundtrack was scrumptious. Original Song: I don’t care how amazing “This is Me” in “The Greatest Showman” was, “Remember Me” from Disney Pixar’s “Coco” is going to win. Big upset right here. This song had me in tears, and still sobbing as I write this. Hey, Pixar can get the best of you. Film Editing: Let’s be real, no one cares. However, the only reason I included this is because the fast-paced editing in “Baby Driver” kept me going. Big dub coming their way. Animated Short: Pixar is about to take yet another one with “Lou.” Clever, ingenious, and actually pulls at your heart, it will leave a smile on anyone’s face. Animated Picture: These nominees really puzzled me. I’m beyond shook “The Boss Baby” got a nomination. What has this world come to? Also (take deep breath) Where is “Cars 3”? If I were an angry writer, I’d be typing 500 words a second with the power of 1,000 suns behind me about why “Cars 3” did not make this list ... but I’m not an angry writer. Biggest snub of the Oscars. Anyways, “Coco” takes this one, no doubt about. For a movie about the dead, it was so alive. One of my top movies of the year. Everyone go see. Leading Actor: The fact James Franco did not get nominated for his performance in “The Disaster Artist” makes me furious, but what are you going to do? (Actually, you can sneak in and hand the announcing card with Franco’s name on it to the presenters. That might work.) Honestly, though, Daniel Kaluuya will win for his “Get Out” performance. Leading Actress: Every guy at Rice is rooting for Margot Robbie. Reasons will not be disclosed. Best Directing: Jordan Peele pulls an RKO out of nowhere with his di- rectorial debut in “Get Out.” Crazy fi lm, had me shook for the rest of the weekend. I love Christopher Nolan, but man, “Get Out” gives “Dunkirk” a run for its money. I pick this one for the dub. Best Picture: Finally, the grand ultimate. After last year’s “La La Land” and “Moonlight” mistake, this year’s Academy Awards have big shoes to fi ll. For me, this is one is easy because I’ve only seen two of the nine and one of them wins: “Dunkirk.” Even the name sounds intense. Take a bow Christopher Nolan, you have done it again. And that’s a wrap. Overall, these nominees have proven that the Academy are just repetitive and out of touch, but maybe that’s just my opinion. I’ll have my B-dubs and large 7-Eleven Slushie on March 4, hopefully you will too.
