Diesel Marine Engines - Mini-Lecture on 24th February . By Robert King
When Rudolf Diesel invented the diesel engine it is unlikely that he could have imagined the extent to which his invention is used today in so many applications .
No more so than in the marine industry where diesel engines power all sorts of craft from the smallest yacht to the largest super tanker .
We were fortunate therefore to have as a speaker Steven Grier who is an experienced marine engineer who gave an illustrated talk on the maintenance of small diesel engines of the type found in small leisure craft .
Starting with the need to regularly change the engine oil and filters despite the fact that many of these engines do only limited hours running he then explained the fuel and injection system and again the need to regularly change the fuel filters to prevent a build-up of sludge restricting the fuel supply to the engine .
Finally he explained the difference between raw water and fresh water cooling , how to change an impeller in the sea water pump and also how to test and replace the thermostat and disassemble and clean the heat exchanger .
Steven then kindly answered the many questions put to him by the club members .

We present a high tech evening for low tech and high tech sailors with Harry Heasman from Raymarine . It will be of interest to all in sailing and motor sections . In presenting and demonstrating products Harry will summarise the history and development of marine equipment and proceed to reviewing current techniques and gadgets in this fast moving market place .
Lots of time available after Harry ’ s talk , which starts at 8.30pm , to look at and play with products .
