Standing on the south side of the lock is ' The Snipe '.
Formerly the Egremont Arms , this building is almost the duplicate of the Richmond Arms which stands alongside the canal basin in Chichester .
- the bird with the long beak , waiting for the people with the long appetites .
The building still stands today , retaining its name but now in use as a private house .
Both inns were no doubt named after two of the canal ' s original investors .
The Egremont Arms shut its doors with the closing of the canal and it then became a farm cottage until acquired by Birdham Estates Limited in 1935 .
It was very nearly demolished in 1936 , but the idea was mooted to convert the premises into a restaurant .
It was run as such by a lady from ' The Lombard Restaurant '. Chelsea , who decided to call the premises ' The Snipe '
