Ocean Youth Trust South ’ s New Yacht “ Prolific ” – Saturday 28 th January – by Helen Jupp , photographs by John Gosnell
A group of 25 sailors were privileged to be given a guided tour of this impressive yacht . She is at present undergoing a refit in Ocean Village . This is mostly done by volunteers and she will be ready to start her new cruising season in April .
The volunteers who showed us around told us about the Ocean Youth Trust ’ s spirit and values , and the opportunities for youngsters to spend time at sea providing lifechanging experiences .
Although traditional in design , she has mod cons such as heating and the latest navigational equipment , although of course the youngsters are shown how to use charts as well as electronic aids .
They allowed us to look into every nook and cranny on board . The shower is being converted into a wet locker because apparently “ there is no need for showers on board for the young people ”!! There are cosy bunks for 12 young people and a further six for crew .
Prolific was built in 2005 and is based on the Norwegian fishing boats of the 19 th century .
