Hayling Island Ramble, Saturday 11th March Thirty ramblers joined Kevin and Janice Fearn for the final walk of this rambling season. Setting off from the pub car park, we walked over the bridge onto Hayling Island and around Northney. A second stop for coffee overlooking the water, and then it was back to the Ship Inn for lunch. Thanks to everyone who joined us - see you in the autumn. The highlight of our walk was the church of St Peter’s, built by monks of the Abbey of Jumieges, Normandy, in 1140, close to the site of an Iron Age shrine, later the site of a Roman temple. Some of St Peter’s interior pillars stand on roughly hewn stones taken from the Roman temple. A handful of our bravest ventured inside to the back pew, in search of the ghost of a sailor, drowned whilst crossing the Wadeway in a storm. This talk is free of charge but it is hoped that Marina berth holders will consider joining the On 23rd April Chichester Marina Berth Holders association for a subscription of £10 per annum.
