Wine Tasting Event – by Robert King, photographs by Maddie Corke The prospect of a free drink normally guarantees a crowd and so it was at the CYC wine tasting evening on 24th February, kindly run by local wine merchants Hennings Wine, who provided the wine and CYC’s own Maddie Corke who put on a splendid selection of cheeses to refresh the palate in between samples. Four whites and four reds, all “New World” wines, were available for tasting together with two “mystery” wines where members were invited to guess the grape, the country of origin, the price and comment on the characteristics with a bottle of Champagne as a prize for the most accurate entry. a new trend in wine drinking as indeed Prosecco has done in recent years. The white mystery wine turned out to be a Chenin Blanc from South Africa and from the same country the mystery red was a Shiraz. Mrs Janet Cartwright correctly identified both and was the worthy winner of the Champagne and further tasting continued well into the evening. Our thanks go to Hennings Wine for organising the wine tasting and supplying the wine, which can be purchased at any of their West Sussex shops. The white wines for tasting included both a Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand and an Australian Chardonnay and perhaps more unusually a Chilean Riesling and a South African Chenin Blanc. Amongst the red wines were an Argentinian Malbec and a Shiraz from Australia but perhaps the most unusual wine of the evening was a sparkling red again from Australia and it remains to be seen whether this variant will set 14
