BOURNEMOUTH SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
NEW YEAR STRAUSS GALA
Sunday 6 January 2019, 3pm
Once again we evoke the heady atmosphere of
the Vienna Philharmonic’s annual New Year’s
Day concert at the Musikverien, by celebrating
2019’s arrival with an uplifting selection of
waltzes, marches and arias by the King of the
Waltz and his contemporaries.
The full forces of the BSO under charismatic
Viennese conductor Thomas Rösner will be
joined by an outstanding guest soprano to bring
you an evening of swirling melodies, glamour
and sparkle, including such favourites as Merry
Wives of Windsor Overture, Tik-Tak Polka, An
Artist’s Life, A Night in Venice, and, of course,
the Radetzky March and The Blue Danube!
There is no Pre-Concert Talk before
today’s performance.

Serenade No.6 in D,

In this concert dedicated to Mozart’s genius,
Papadopoulos leads two of the composer’s
fi nest concertos from the keyboard, preceded
by his Serenata Notturna (No.6) from the early
Salzburg years.
Composed eleven months before his death,
the 27th Concerto is Mozart’s fi nal piano
concerto. Loved by musicologists (for its
instances of stylistic experimentation) and

BBC NATIONAL ORCHESTRA OF WALES
Sunday 17 March 2019, 3pm
Tonight’s second half is dedicated to Concerto
No.20 - a work both dramatic and delicate, with
a fi rst movement evoking memories of Mozart’s
fi nest operatic moments and a gloriously
romantic second movement. Dazzling, grandiose and quintessentially
American in its ragtime & blues
infl uences, Gershwin’s Concerto was
the perfect successor, in 1925, to his
masterful 1924 jazz-classical fusion,
Rhapsody in Blue, and Joanna MacGregor,
admired for her ability to traverse
classical and jazz styles with ease, is the
ideal soloist.
