ORCHESTRA OF THE SWAN BOURNEMOUTH SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
Thursday 8 November 2018, 7.30pm Friday 7 December 2018, 7.30pm
Described as ‘superb’ by the New York Times and
‘flawless’ by Muso, Tai Murray is one of the few
African-American stars of today’s classical scene,
debuting with Chicago SO aged just 9 and making her
Proms debut in 2016 with BBC NOW.
Performing perhaps the most popular of violin
concertos, Tai is joined by Julian Lloyd Webber, a
‘national treasure’ as cellist and conductor, along
with being Principal of the Royal Birmingham
Conservatoire. Combined with a symphony
Mendelssohn wrote aged just 13, and one by Mozart
written at 17, this really is an evening of voracious
young talent, spanning over 200 years!
Pre-Concert Talk (6.30pm to 7pm): Featuring
Tai Murray & Julian Lloyd Webber.
Free entry using your ticket for tonight’s concert.

Symphony No.25
in G minor, K.183
Written to introduce Act 1 of his famous
1874 opera, Mussorgsky’s evocative tone
poem is the perfect concert opener,
depicting the gradual approach of daylight
using five variations on a solemn folk tune,
while Rachmaninov’s 2nd Piano Concerto
could justifiably claim to be the most-
loved work in the entire repertoire, with
its unforgettable romantic melodies and
dazzling pianistic effects.
Written in his 20s, Tchaikovsky’s First
Symphony caused him more inner turmoil
than any of his later works, and yet the
outcome, though youthful in its structure,
is filled with beautifully constructed
melodies, wrought from heartfelt fragments
of his beloved Russian folk songs.
Pre-Concert Talk (6.30pm to 7pm):
Presented by a member of the BSO team.
