OXFORD PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA
Thursday 13 June 2019, 7.30pm
Stalin’s death in 1953 brought freedom and
rehabilitation for Shostakovich, and many
of his previously ‘hidden’ works came out
into the open. This concerto, from 1957,
refl ects this new spirit: written for his son
Maxim to perform at his graduation from
Moscow Conservatoire, it is one of his most
passionate works, loved by audiences for
its lyrical second movement.
The concert opens with the neo-classical
concerto, Dumbarton Oaks, pre-dating the
Shostakovich piece by 20 years,
while the second half celebrates French
music, from Ravel’s languorous Pavane to
the verve of Bizet’s innovative (and only)
symphony, written at age 17 while still a
student in Paris.
Pre-Concert Talk (6.30pm to 7pm):

Britain’s favourite clarinettist joins EUCO for
a programme of the most popular, and fi nest,
works in the orchestral repertoire. We open with
a miniature masterpiece, ostensibly based on six
16th century French dances, but in fact crammed
with Peter Warlock’s own melodic inventiveness,
while the great Clarinet Concerto, from Mozart’s
fi nal year, has an autumnal quality and a yearning
central Adagio.
The Adagio for which Samuel Barber is most
famous (originally part of his Op.11 quartet) opens
the second half of this night of favourites, which
comes to a rousing close with one of Haydn’s most
dramatic and exciti ng symphonies.
Pre-Concert Talk (6.30pm to 7pm): Featuring
tonight’s soloist, Emma Johnson. Free entry using
