Cheeky Monkeys

The West Dorset Fencing Club meets on Wednesdays from 7-9pm and is perfect for all ages . After a popular demonstration at the Dorset Food and Arts Festival in Queen Mother Square last summer , the club is keen to recruit new members . Spokesperson for the West Dorset Fencing Club , Georgina Hoskyns explains : “ The sport of fencing is suitable for all ages whether you fence for fitness and fun or wish to take part in competitions . “ It appeals equally to boys and girls and promotes self-confidence and quick decision making . Fencers can compete with one or all three weapons : foil , epee or sabre ( all have blunt tips and no sharp edges ). Epee is also part of the modern pentathlon .” The West Dorset Fencing Club offers expert tuition from Csaba Hadju who is an experienced and fully qualified Grade 5 coach from Hungary . The West Dorset Fencing Club has been running for seven years and has a strong legacy of former Olympians . It was established by the late Shirley Parker in 2009 , who in her youth was twice British Champion , took part in two Olympic Games and also won gold and silver medals at the Commonwealth Games . Allan Jay and the late Bill Hoskyns are also Olympians and have brought a wealth of experience to share with the members , having taken part in five and six Olympics respectively and winning two silver medals each .

NEW FAMILIES WELCOME The weekly playgroup Cheeky Monkeys has been running for 15 years and is more in demand than ever . It is a popular Friday morning event held at Brownsword Hall and is run by a volunteer group of mums where children take part in play , craft activities and singing time . Due to popularity and influx of new families the group is requesting new volunteers to help run the weekly group . Main tasks include helping to prepare the room , preparing snacks and teas and coffees for mums and clearing up . Volunteer Anna Ledsham said : “ It is a really friendly group and many of us moved here without knowing a lot of other families so it has been so important for us . “ We are a close group of volunteers but due to family commitments we often need an extra pair of hands . “ Young or old , please get in touch if you have an hour to spare on a Friday morning .” The group runs every term time Friday from 10am until 11.30am and it runs solely on donations . If anyone wants to come along please just turn up on the day and it is £ 2 per family and all children are welcome from birth to school age . Secondhand books and toys are also welcome donations .
