WATCHING OVER the square

From Her Majesty The Queen to an ever changing skyline , Tony and Kathie Curtis have seen it all from their windows overlooking Queen Mother Square

The retired couple were one of the first residents in Newborough House and have witnessed the Square grow and blossom over the last five years . “ We were told we ’ d be living on a building site for five years when we moved in July 2011 , but we ’ ve thoroughly enjoyed it . The noise has been negligible and we ’ ve had a grandstand view of history being created ,” says Tony , 85 . The couple have taken a keen interest in the gradual development of Queen Mother Square and watched as empty spaces became landmark buildings such as Kingspoint House , Strathmore House and the Duchess of Cornwall Inn . The royal visit and unveiling of the Queen Mother Statue proved to be a highlight for them . “ It was a wonderful day for Poundbury and the community . For us , the unveiling was also a celebration . There ’ s also been a steady flow of tourists coming to see the statue day and night ,” says Kathie , 80 . As one of the Square ’ s first residents , they ’ ve found Poundbury to be the perfect home .
