A DAY FOR

Dorchester

It was a momentous day for Poundbury and one that will be remembered for many years to come

The day Her Majesty The Queen came to Poundbury for the official unveiling of Queen Mother Square raised Poundbury ' s profile to new heights . Hundreds of people turned out with flags to watch The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh accompany their son The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall to the iconic Duchy estate . After meeting Duchy staff and developers in the square and local charities and Duchy farmers inside Waitrose , The Queen unveiled a monument of her late mother that takes pride of place in the centre of Queen Mother Square . Introducing The Prince to the stage , Poundbury Development Director Andrew Hamilton said : “ Today is a very special occasion for everybody who has been associated with Poundbury .

“ 25 years ago , The Prince of Wales invited me to co-ordinate the expansion of the beautiful county town of Dorchester on Duchy of Cornwall land . “ When Your Majesty and your Royal Highness last visited Poundbury in 1998 , the project was in its infancy , and if you look about you now , it is easy to forget how truly groundbreaking this was at its inception . “ Nowhere else has someone attempted to build a genuine mixed community- integrating social and private housing together with commercial uses , and a radical new approach to urban design .” Mr Hamilton went on to praise The Prince for his steadfast determination and vision , adding : “ You , sir , single-handedly set out to challenge the accepted orthodoxy of planning and development in this country .
