ARTS ON THE ART TRAIL IN POUNDBURY P EXHIBITS AND WORKSHOPS Having sped past Artwave West many times on the A35, I was curious to stop and explore this independent art gallery in Morcombelake. Once inside, I wasn't disappointed by what I found A fter a warm welcome from owner and artist Donna Goold, your eyes are drawn to the wealth of diverse artwork that adorn the walls. Opened in 2009, the stylish open-plan space is on the site of the former Ship Inn (not that you’d recognise it from the crisp, uncluttered décor inside). The gallery has since established itself as one of the leading contemporary art venues in the south west. Carefully selecting its artists and attracting professional practitioners, as well as talent-spotting younger and lightly exhibited artists. Owners Donna and Martin Goold are both working artists and exhibit regularly. Upon visiting Artwave West you’re bound to see something fresh and exciting as they have a different exhibition every six weeks. The latest is ‘Presence’ that runs from 27 April to 27 May and features new works by Martin Goold alongside Amy Albright, Susan Laughton, Paul Denham and ceramicist Chris Taylor. There is also a popular programme of art workshops that take place. The workshop groups are small in size (a maximum of eight) and includes lunch from the nearby Felicity's Farm Shop. Perfect for beginners or the more experienced, with guest artists visiting and spending time with the class. There are further opportunities to meet artists at the regular private viewing events that take place. Feeling uplifted and inspired, I jumped back in the car and made the short journey back to Poundbury.
