working alongside each other at their salon Pure has been a move they ’ ll never regret . “ We opened the salon together after a period where we ’ d both been beavering away working separately and we thought why not do it together ,” says Gayna . “ It ’ s so nice to have someone to bounce ideas off and yes of course we have disagreements but then one of us will back down and we always want the best for the business .” Watching this mum and daughter at work , it is clear their strength is building on each other ’ s skills , and that is obviously an attribute their customers appreciate and keep coming back for . “ I think our customers really value a family business and we ’ ve really appreciated that ,” says Gayna . Since opening their business in 2014 the business has tripled in size with a team of six beauty therapists . For daughter Steph , aged 30 , who previously managed salons in London , working alongside her mum has been the perfect solution . She says : “ I can ’ t see anything changing now . We ’ ve become a good team and it certainly has brought us closer together .” Not far away accountant Andrew Jones and his wife Denise work together from their office in Prospect House and also from a second office at home . Having met at work 11 years ago , they were married soon after and when Andrew decided to take a big step and set up his own firm three years ago , it was the natural move to work together . “ It was great having Denise there for support and we ’ ve worked together for so long we knew we could make it work ,” says Andrew . Andrew says that many of his local clients are
family businesses and he thinks it gives people that added incentive to make it work because it benefits the entire family . “ I ’ ve found there ’ s a lot of businesses locally that are a husband-and-wife partnership and over the time they have become friends too . It ’ s great to watch their businesses grow ,” he adds . According to the Institute for Family Businesses the southwest of England has more than 450,000 family businesses . They state an incredible 89 per cent of all private firms in the region are owned by families . With one of the most picturesque office views in Poundbury , Katie and Tim Gallego at Poundbury Wealth have been working together for nine years . When they moved to Poundbury and set up the business it was the natural choice to work together and Katie said it is a move they are pleased they made . For Tim , the family aspect has helped cement relationships . “ People like the fact we are a family business without a doubt ,” he says . “ People know us personally as a family and there ’ s a lot of support here for local businesses and shops and families working together .”
