Queen Mother SQUARE
This year we will see the official launch of Queen Mother Square with the unveiling of an iconic statue to commemorate the Queen Mother
Every community has its beating heart and for Poundbury it is undoubtedly the marvellous Queen Mother Square . The square is already vibrant and exciting and framed by stunning architecture . This autumn the spotlight will be on the unveiling of the statue commemorating The Queen Mother . The Duchess of Cornwall Inn , a joint venture between The Duchy of Cornwall and Hall & Woodhouse , will also be opening this autumn on the corner of the square . The inn will feature a public house , a restaurant , 20 guest rooms and it was named by The Prince of Wales to honour Her Royal Highness . Anthony Woodhouse , Hall & Woodhouse ’ s Managing Director , said : “ Our inn will blend with the classical architecture of the square and mirror his Royal Highness ’ s vision for Poundbury .” He adds : “ Our aim is to provide a community facility for all occasions that both residents and visitors to Poundbury can cherish and enjoy .” The striking square was designed by Quinlan and Francis Terry and Working Group Architects , whose brief from the masterplanner Leon Krier was to design a classical square at the heart of the development . To the north of the square Royal Pavilion is a classical building , which when completed , will have 20 luxury apartments and a health spa on the ground floor , complete with swimming pool and gym . Above the stone archway will be two apartments - the Penthouse and the Bell Tower . This will be the highest point in Poundbury . The quintessentially European feel of the square was inspired by bustling squares on the continent . To the East side of the square , Strathmore House , which opens in April , comprises of eight spacious apartments and two retail premises . The final building will be the £ 21
