Adding More of YOU to Your Class by Jennifer Campbell and Lynnda Brown Distance Learning and Academic Technology is excited about the capabilities of the new, easy-to-use Kaltura server. It is like having our own internal YouTube server; the difference is that the links are not public by default. Kaltura has built-in screen capture and web capture tools that make recording video much easier than any of the video creation tools the Distance Learning has recommended in the past. Once you create a video, you can easily use it in multiple course sections. Kaltura gives TCC professors a tool they haven’t had before – a simple, format to capture, upload, and distribute desktop lectures. From within Blackboard, professors can select Kaltura Media from the Tools menu to make a narrated video of what is showing on the computer monitor. This could be a PowerPoint lecture, an exploration of a great website, or directions on how to complete a class assignment. Creating videos using Kaltura might provide an alternate way to provide feedback to students. In Blackboard when a professor adds a comment to the gradebook, an option for a mashup is available. Adding video to a comment is considered a mashup. With Kaltura you can personalize your feedback with a quick video message. Only the student or students you intend to see the feedback will be able to access the video. When you have multiple students who require the same video, you can reuse the same video clip. If you missed the hands-on workshops that were held on each campus earlier this semester, Distance Learning and Academic Technology has instructional handouts and videos that provide step-bystep directions to create your instructional videos. You can access these on in Blackboard from the Faculty tab >> Bb Handouts and Tutorials, or directly at https:// sites.google.com/site/bbfacultyresources/home/kalturavideo. 9 8
