Anonymous The Midnight Cries A dam reached into the envelope and pulled out tickets to a ball that was taking place at Macbeth’s castle in Scotland. Adam looked up at Claire, “Who gave this to you, and why did he give you one of these?”Adam asked holding up the invitation. “I’m not sure. It was a homeless person on the street that came up to me, and told me that the letter was of great importance. He also handed me an invitation.” Claire said as she looked at Adam pacing across the room. “I don’t want you to go to this event, I feel like it wouldn’t be safe.” “Well, thank you for your concern, detective. But exactly why are you so concerned?” as soon as the words escaped her lips she wish she could have taken them back. Adam looked up at her, he nodded and then turned and left the room. “What’s going on?” Jason asked as he followed Adam out of the room. “Get your best clothes, we’re going to that ball.” Claire walked over to the window facing the front side of the house, she leaned against the window and drew back the curtains to see Adam and Jason walking down the icy steps. “I wish I didn’t have to go, Adam. But then, he’ll kill you.” The castle was filled with women wearing long luxurious gowns, and men in dark black suits, as they made their way into the ballroom in two’s. The ceiling was lifted high and a beautiful glass chandelier hung in the middle of the room reflecting its light to the sparkling glass walls. Adam and Jason walked down the stairs, and looked around casually. “They really must have worked hard to get this place looking like this, since we’ve been here yesterday. I wonder what officer Deadric Kronin and the inspector are doing here in Scotland.” Adam said as he made his way through the crowd towards them. “What are the two of you doing here in Scotland?” “Adam! No surprise to see you here. But well, we got an anonymous call saying that there was going to be a kidnapping and we...” soft music cut the inspector off, as couples started to fill in the center of the room. “Detective. May I have the pleasure.” a familiar voice said from behind him, Adam turned to see Claire in a long dark blue dress that swept the glass floors. Her black hair was in an elegant bun, her eyes sparkled as they walked into the center of the floor. The dance was slow, but the air between them was stale. “I told you to stay in London. Why did you come?” “Adam... do you feel awkward with me being here?” “No our friendship is uncompromised...” all of a sudden the lights went out. Adam pulled his hands away from Claire and looked around into the darkness. People were running around frantically, Someone ran across the room, and almost knocked Adam to the ground, but he steaded himself. And as fast as the place had gone dark the lights where back on. Adam did a 360 degree turn to scout out the room, then froze. “Claire...” Adam whispered as Jason ran up to him. “Where is Claire?” “Adam are you alright.” “Where’s Claire, and how did the power go out?” “The police are searching for the secret.” Adam pushed past him frantically, then suddenly Jason grabbed his arm and ripped a sheet of paper of his back, and handed it to him. Adam took the sheet from him and read it: Congratulations detective, for making things so easy for me. I took her right out of your arms. I might as well have taken you since I had to come that close. And just in case you’re wondering what will happen to your “friend”, her pain will end at midnight. You only have 4 hours, tick-toc, ticktoc there goes the clock. Sweet dreams. -Kirran Deidcron Adam started to run to run towards the stairs, Jason following behind him. “Where are you going?” “It’s that clock.”Adam said as the ran out of the ball room.
