The Gift of Giving Ellen Galupo Here is an example of one of the works we did in Writer’s Craft. I highly recommend this class to those whose passions include writing. This class is truly a hidden gem of Kingsway College! We did numerous things to improve our writing skills through various very enjoyable exercises in class. FREEDOM ODE We sing a new song from our native tongue No shackles cling to our wrists anymore. When freedom they declared and vict’ry sung. Our blistered feet that burns no longer sore. Our backs bear only scars not wounds of whips. Our callused napes no longer trammels bore. But free we are, rejoice with hearts and lips. We shall soar and proudly rise. Been burnt harshly under the sun, whipped by strips. For freedom often bears a cruel price. Three hundred thirty years we’re strained to work. It seemed that God ignored our humble cries But proudly fly again like lark and stork. FREEDOM FROM UNREQUITED LOVE (SONNET) Allow none bind our freedom with a torque. Captive of the Enchanting Ere I shall start, I must deny mine pride. ‘Tis not a norm to see me plea for thee. Erewhile I am the man thou set aside But kneel I here in front with bended knee. Ifsoever, thou verily dismiss And I, not suit and worth thy lovely eyes, Parfay, mine heart no longer live for bliss. For love unrequited become mine vice Discharge mine heart away from beauty’s charm. For I am captive to thy words unsaid. Insidiously love’s absence done me harm. Milady, stitch my heart profusely bled. But if mine heart refuse thee mend one piece, Alack, my love I bid thee prithee peace. Mariel DeCastro The Earnest Prayer of a Troubled Soul “Lord, where art thou? Please help your children now. Before you we kneel, To tell you what our hearts and minds feel. Others have thoughts that are troubling And few of us are longing... Lord we are losing hope. Please teach us how to cope. We are in distress, broken and in despair This we can no longer bear. If it’s not disrupting your plans We ask for the help of your hands. We need the love and the comfort you provide, We need you by our side. So often we are overcome by trials and tribulations. That we have forgotten to converse with you through meditations. Please
