DISTRICT PRIORITIES UPDATE

Superintendent search and attendance top list of initiatives .

The Texas Association of School Boards ’ Executive Search Services is managing the district ’ s process to find a new superintendent . The search firm gathered input from families , staff and community members through an online survey and community meetings . District officials anticipate filling the position in January . In June , Orlando Riddick accepted the superintendent position in Midland ISD .

Student success links to attendance , and the district ’ s attendance goal for this school year is 97 percent . During the first four weeks of school , the average daily attendance was 97.5 percent , a half point higher than our goal . This sounds encouraging , but it reflects more than 4,000 absences . Students who miss only two days a month are out of class 10 percent of the school year and thus less likely to graduate .
Teachers and principals will continue to communicate the importance of attendance throughout the year . Students will receive incentives , and campuses will track and celebrate milestones .
