APPRENTICESHIP, TRAINEE &
CAREER PROGRAMS
Our FocuS
Develop and implement comprehensive career advisory
pathways, strategies and programs that pave the way for
the next generation of Civil Contractors.
Our Achievements
•
Continuing our strong focus on promoting and
marketing pathways for new apprentices/trainees through
our targeted Foresite and Taster programs, and advising
employers of the benefits of staff undertaking training for
personnel and business development.
•
Working closely with members and government
authorities to ensure awareness of the Victorian
Governments Skills First program, supporting employees
in obtaining a Nationally Accredited qualification in Civil
Construction.
•
Continued advocacy for the various civil
construction skills to be recognised within the National
Training framework as a formal “trade” (see page 27).
•
Over eighty (80) apprentices are now being
supported by Civil Train, re-enforcing our strong focus
and commitment towards upskilling the industry with
accredited qualifications.
•
During the 2016/17 period, we conducted three
(3) Student Taster programs in Regional Victoria, while
promoting the VET in Schools program (VETis) for
Certificate II in Civil Construction. Over 40% of students
from the program have gone on to undertake an
Apprenticeship.
•
The Foresite program contributed to fifteen (15)
third year Civil Engineering Graduate students receiving a
twelve week work placement with member organisations;
80% of these students were offered a job after their
placement concluded.
•
Facilitated and attended over eighteen (18) Expo
Programs with exposure to over 88,500 people promoting
the industry as a “career of choice”.
WHAT’S AHEAD?
Continue to build and grow our reputation as an
organisation supporting industry through…
•
Advocacy and developing strategies to promote
the benefits of entering the civil sector as a possible
career pathway.
•
Identifying and implementing new training
pathways for apprentices and trainees to access.
•
Strong focus on up-skilling the industry and
gaining a nationally accredited qualification through
Apprenticeships and Supervisory level courses.
•
Explore opportunities for the introduction of
Diploma courses in Civil Construction across the sector as
career opportunities.
•
Ongoing promotion of our Taster & Foresite
programs to Secondary Schools and Universities that
have a strong focus on Civil Construction.
•
Working with various cohorts of disadvantaged
and vulnerable people to identify potential students for
the Centre of Excellence in Earthmoving program (CEE).
•
Participate in the Apprenticeship and Traineeships
Completion Project (ATCP); an industry pilot to identify
barriers to completion for the retention of apprentices
and trainees, develop good practice models, improve
completion rates and test these solutions in practice.
