LOVE LETTERS FROM C a i n r alifo WORDS & PHOTOS BY JENNA KNIGHT My now husband, Travis, and I began our idea for a change when we were vacationing in Tortola in the winter of 2015. It was the most beautiful surf trip I had ever taken. After our trip, I came back to Maryland for my next semester at school, I didn’t feel like myself and I really hadn’t since I began college. I initially went to college because everyone else was going and because I didn’t know what else to do. I was living for the expectations of society and what I “should” be doing. I also didn’t know what career path I wanted to follow. I needed a better sense of myself, and who I was as a person. In eyes of maany, it was a major disappointment when I decided to withdraw from college. But I finally felt like I could breathe and take a step back and get a better grasp on my life. It took Travis and I 6 months to buckle down and create a plan for change. This plan included a 1993 Chevy van. We gutted that babe and made it a total adventure mobile. It was such a rewarding obstacle to fix up an old vehicle. Travis did so much work on the engine to make her a trust worthy chariot to the west coast. Our van was complete by the fall. We had incorporated a pump sink, cabinets, a retracting bed frame, tv, mini fridge, and a solar 173
