Where the budget and specification were concerned, the Challenger structure ticked all the boxes. The modern method of construction for this type of build provided substantial cost and time savings for the build schedule, releasing money and manpower for use elsewhere in the project whilst creating an energy efficient, clear span space filled with natural light and contributing a modern, distinctive build style to the overall design. A close working relationship began between the team at Watson Batty and the architectural technologists at Collinson to ensure the two buildings would be seamlessly linked and complement each other in an aesthetically pleasing way. York St Johns’ Logo is printed externally onto the architectural membrane cover, creating an exclusive, personal finishing touch. Collinson worked on the project as sub-contractors for Triton Construction, who designed and built the traditional style building used to accommodate the fitness suite, changing facilities, classrooms and conference space. The new, state of the art facility was officially opened to students in September 2016, and the University already has agreements in place with a number of local clubs and schools, including Rugby League Club York City Knights who have been enjoying training in the new facility to escape the harsh winter weather conditions! The Challenger facility is constructed from a steel framed superstructure and covered with a heavy duty architectural membrane which allows light to permeate in creating a light, bright sporting facility and reducing the need for artificial lighting during daylight hours. Covering 42m x 25m, the Challenger facility accommodates 5 badminton courts with markings for a range of sports including basketball, tennis and 5 a side football, 3 separate storage rooms providing ample storage for equipment and a viewing balcony, for safe spectator viewing. The integration of Collinson rebound walling and Acoustik screening systems creates an aesthetically pleasing walling solution whilst improving and enhancing acoustic performance of the facility for the comfort of players, spectators and coaching staff.
