Forum Q&A
Q: Beginning to forget who I am
At the moment I feel so small. My life revolves
around another person. I know it sounds selfish.
I do. But what about me? Yes I look after someone
who is ill, who has a medical diagnosis. But no one
is actively looking after MY mental health as a carer…
A: The best advice we can offer is…that you have to stay strong for yourself and put
yourself first sometimes.
A: Recently I had a bit of a breakdown due to exhaustion. I hadn’t been looking after
myself for a long time because every bit of energy I had went to looking after others. I
was starting to struggle with my responsibilities, so I had to start looking after my own
health a little better… Remember to take care of yourself too and it will make you a better
carer for them as well.
A: It’s easy to lose your identity, but only you can change the situation… You have every
right to a life of your own. Have an evening or two going to classes, the gym, wherever
YOU want to go.
A: Is this something you’ve experienced? We also suggest checking out our Upfront guide
at carersuk.org/upfront. In 10 minutes you can get your own tailored information plan.
A: Is there other information that you are
missing out on? Have you looked at getting
a carers’ assessment? It’s really important
to look after yourself too.
