My life revolves around another person. I know it sounds selfish. I do. But what about me? Yes I look after someone who is ill, who has a medical diagnosis. But no one is actively looking after MY mental health as a carer… A: The best advice we can offer is…that you have to stay strong for yourself and put yourself first sometimes. A: Recently I had a bit of a breakdown due to exhaustion. I hadn’t been looking after myself for a long time because every bit of energy I had went to looking after others. I was starting to struggle with my responsibilities, so I had to start looking after my own health a little better… Remember to take care of yourself too and it will make you a better carer for them as well. A: It’s easy to lose your identity, but only you can change the situation… You have every right to a life of your own. Have an evening or two going to classes, the gym, wherever YOU want to go.
