Campaign with us: Carersuk.org/news/campaigns
We have ensured that
the Action Plan includes a
project on how to improve
carer breaks and respite;
and a project to support
parent carers to navigate
the transition from child to
adult services as their child
approaches 18.
But the gaping hole is
around financial support.
When I spoke at the launch
of the action plan with the
Minister, I made this point
strongly and made it clear
that we will be stepping
up our campaigning
on increasing Carer’s
Allowance.
Our focus now is ensuring
that the positive actions
in the plan are taken
forward and that we hold
government to account
on these. We will also
be campaigning hard to
increase Carer’s Allowance
with our new campaign
Fairer for Carers.
Fairer for Carers
The costs of caring and
the impact of giving up or
reducing work to care can
be devastating. Carers UK
wants to see a significant
increase in financial
support for carers including
an increase in Carer’s
Allowance.
In Scotland, Carer’s
Allowance is going up by
£8.50 per week, to the
same level as Jobseeker’s
Allowance. In the short
term we want Carer’s
Allowance to be made
Fairer for Carers across the
UK. We’re asking for Carer’s
Allowance in England, Wales
and Northern Ireland to be
raised by at least £8.50, to
match the changes being
made in Scotland. There
must also be an increase
in the Carer’s Premium so
that carers on the lowest
incomes benefit from an
increase.
MP, calling for all carers
in the rest of UK to see at
least the increase in Carer’s
Allowance that carers in
Scotland will see.
We’ll be asking you to
campaign with us by adding
your name to our letter
to the Work and Pensions
Secretary, Esther McVey
