Teams get their quiz on !

On a very cold Monday night , way back in February , teams gathered in London for ‘ Get Your Quiz On ’ to compete for the honour of being the brainiest brains ( and a lovely hamper ). It was great to see so many people there supporting Carers UK and finding out more about caring . Together we raised £ 1,893 . The quiz was held at a pub called ‘ The Alice ’, whose staff also got involved distributing collection buckets and donning our Carers UK T-shirts . Thank you to ‘ The Alice ’ and everyone who took part . And of course , congratulations to the winning team made up of Carers UK supporters .

Students vote to support carers in Northern Ireland

Great news ! Queen ’ s University Belfast RAG ( Raise & Give ) has chosen Carers NI to be one of their official charities over the next academic year . RAG is the official fundraising group of the Students ’ Union at Queen ’ s University Belfast . The charities of the year are chosen by students , so it ’ s wonderful to see caring is an issue that resonates with students themselves and is something they are keen to support . We were up against some stiff competition and it shows what a positive impact Carers NI is making !
Traditionally RAG come up with very creative fundraising and awareness raising activities , which they describe as “ beyond the norm ”, so we are excited to see what they come up with !

Book review - Taking Care of People with Dementia

JE Hardacre has put her experience of working with carers for 40 years in the NHS into book form by tackling information for people caring for people with dementia . She ’ s approached this in a different way – telling stories by carers and giving an A-Z of practical help under several different chapter headings . It is very quick to read and provides detail that is really digestible . It ’ s possible to dip in and out of sections that you want more information on as well as reading it from start to finish .
With so much to consider as dementia slowly starts and develops , it ’ s a book that you can return to again and again . The stories from carers provide a window into real life , showing in each and every quote the humanity and reality of care and caring . The quotes from carers provide valuable insight as well as advice and tips , but also illustrate the wide range in people ’ s journeys and experience .
‘ Taking Care of People with Dementia – An A-Z of practical help and caregivers ’ stories ’ is priced £ 6.99 and can be found on Amazon .
