to become a ‘Capitalist’ BMX World Championships in 2010, the UCI Mountain Bike & Trials World Championships in 2013, and the UCI Mountain Bike Marathon World Championships in 2014. All three were firsts for the African continent. Aside from offering a very attractive lifestyle, the city boasts some of the best schools in the country and with nearperfect weather all year round, it is no wonder that so many people choose to live and invest in our city. The Pietermaritzburg Chamber of Business (PCB) is the fourth-largest business chamber in the country with around 900 members. We are proud of the fact that we are a place with a close business community and where most business is done on the basis of established relationships. The PCB motto “Economic and Enterprise Development” gives recognition to the fact that the Chamber’s core focuses are local economic development, and the growth and prosperity of business enterprises. The two are inextricably linked, for without either the other won’t occur. It is the mission of the PCB to promote better business, more and successful entrepreneurship, local economic development, and the growth of business enterprises within the Msunduzi and uMgungundlovu municipal areas. We engaged in the development of Capital magazine to focus on our beautiful capital city in all its forms, and in so doing, to promote the greater Pietermaritzburg and KZN Midlands area by telling the stories of its businesspeople. There is an astonishing concentration of human capital to be found here: cultural capital, historical capital, intellectual capital, and social capital. Maritzburgers know very well that this capital is absolutely crucial for personal and business success. The print issue of Capital will be supported by a digital version, which will contain video, photo galleries, clickable adverts, links to more information, and other exciting interactive elements not possible with print. We are proud to live in and do business in the political capital of the most beautiful, fertile and richly diverse province of South Africa. If you’re not currently doing business in Pietermaritzburg, then we invite you to become a Capitalist in all the best senses of the word. Melanie Veness PCB CEO Capital | Issue 1 | 9
