66 67 3 5 Bridgewater Canal: Worsley to Manchester Peak Forest Canal: Dukinfield Junction to Marple Bridge This journey takes you through stunning countryside and passes through two tunnels and crosses a great aqueduct 97ft above the River Goyt before reaching the flight of 16 locks at Marple (You need to have a forward facing white light on to go through the tunnels). Enjoy a trip along what is generally thought to be, and referred to as, the first canal built in the UK. This trail truly encompasses a taste of past and present Greater Manchester; from countryside landmarks to iconic urban buildings. The Macclesfield Canal was opened in 1831 as a direct link between Manchester and the Midlands. This route has much industrial heritage interest as well as passing through attractive countryside. Despite getting on and off at flights of locks, you do not need to portage any yourself. 6 Peak Forest Canal: Marple to Whaley Bridge 4 Macclesfield Canal A peaceful journey along the Peak Forest Canal with no locks or portages. At 518 feet above sea level this is the highest stretch of navigable water in the entire canal system. On a clear day you will get fabulous views of the Pennines and Kinder Scout to the south.
