CBD for TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury)

2X Super Bowl Champion for the New York Giants, Leonard Marshall was diagnosed with chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) in 2013, as a result of repeated head injuries sustained during his NFL career. Marshall’s entire post-NFL career has been around prevention, education and advocacy for head injuries.

“This is literally a life and death matter. We have GOT to start having real, honest conversations, in locker rooms, in doctor’s offices and around the dinner table about brain trauma in the home and on the field,” says Marshall.

As Marshall’s brain injury symptoms progressively got worse, he began to seek ways to moderate them. Marshall turned to CBD and

began to feel “like Leonard again.” CBD’s anti-inflammatory properties enabled Marshall to decrease his use of heavy pharmaceuticals which had their own undesirable side effects. Chronic pain and mood swings were reduced, focus increased. “When you’re managing symptoms like mine, it really matters what you put into your body. The CBD I use, Elixinol, is not some manufactured synthetic, it’s an organic whole-plant hemp-based product.”

CBD is a neuroprotective and researchers believe it may even help prevent the damaging effects of concussions or head trauma. In a 2016 Washington Post article , Lester Grinspoon, a professor emeritus at Harvard went so far as to suggest that

individuals prone to head injuries use CBD as a preventative measure, taking a capsule or two to take advantage of the neuroprotective properties of CBD. Since there are no known side-effects, no psychoactive effects, and no known cases of overdose, this could be a lifesaver for those at high risk of brain injury at all ages.

Furthering his commitment to advocacy for brain injuries, Leonard Marshall recently announced his intentions to donate his brain to CTE research. “I’ve had to come to grips with CTE and my condition, but I want to be able to help others, I do that every day, but this is a legacy.” Marshall says he’ll continue to use CBD while advocating for continued awareness of TBI, including prevention and treatment.

“My focus is educating people, about how they can blunt the symptoms of head injuries, or maybe event prevent TBI, by using CBD - without getting high. I want people to know what’s available to them so no one has to suffer like I have,” said Marshall.
