CANNAHEALTH Seniors: Finding Comfort with Cannabis | Page 8

Smoking or inhaling (even through a vaporizer) is not safe for individuals with CF. Marijuana may contain fungus and lead to lung infection and other potential problems. DO NOT operate a vehicle or heavy machinery after using marijuana, even if you don’t feel the effects (sometimes there is a delayed effect, especially with edible products). It is important that children and pets do not get access to marijuana products, particularly edible products that may be appealing to them. They can be particularly harmful to children and pets. Edible products have marijuana mixed in oils/fats. Enzymes will be needed with these products. There is often delayed absorption of edible products, so it is important not to continue consuming more than a usual dose or you may become quite sick.

Medical marijuana was approved in Florida when it was a ballot question in the 2016

general election. It is scheduled to take effect after July 3 and the Florida legislature

has referred decisions and rules for its implementation to the Florida Department of Health. We will have to wait and see if CF patients are given access to cannabis.

The average life expectancy of persons with CF is currently 40 years of age. Improving

the coordination and quality of care for CF patients is beset with hurdles that must be

overcome. Because medical cannabis has shown to improve the symptoms and

lives of some patients who use it, it truly can’t be ignored.
