magine, a drug has been introduced into the United States of America, people are dying of overdoses and families are being devastated by the tragedy of addiction. Crime and poverty are at an all-time high and this drug is the topic of conversation in homes, the media, and in the world of politics. The entire country is perplexed as to how to address and end this epidemic. Thus, the government and judicial system conclude that the answer is to throw both the drug addicts and the drug dealers all in the same prisons in order to "ensure public safety." The sentences are up to 10 times longer than any other drug related crime and the cycle of addiction, poverty, and crime continue. We don’t have to imagine the former part of this nightmare, in fact the exact set of circumstances have happened twice in America in the past 30 years. However, depending on the drug causing this epidemic and the socio-economic demographic make up of the drug addicts and the drug dealers the latter results have been extremely different.
