What is Holistic/Alternative Medicine?

What sparked your interest in Holistic/Alternative Medicine?

I spent a lot of time in rural Louisiana learning about the healing power of nature. I also spent a lot of time in the doctor’s office in my childhood due to severe allergies. A path which eventually led to my immune system being severely damaged due to the treatments recommended by allopathic physicians. I was on the path to conventional medical school and I had great relationships with all of my physicians who were also my mentors. After suffering for

my

doctor told me that he did not know. I Googled ways to rebuild my immune system which led me to a local naturopath. After 8 months of naturopathic treatment, I was completely free of the burden of takings hundreds of dollars of prescription medications which I had been taking since I was old enough to swallow a pill. I talked to my naturopath about her career and immediately knew it was perfect for me. I found the closest accredited naturopathic medical school to Louisiana, applied and the rest is history

“Holistic medicine is much what it sounds like — an approach to health and healing that takes the whole person into consideration. A person's mind and spirit are treated as important to health as the body. Giving mind, body and spirit equal attention serves to stimulate the body's natural ability to heal itself and ultimately improves health outcomes.” (Wang)

“Alternative medicine” is defined by Merriam-Webster as “any of various systems of healing or treating disease (as homeopathy, chiropractic, naturopathy, Ayurveda, or faith healing) that are not included in the traditional curricula taught in medical schools of the United States and Britain.” (Alternative Medicine)

“Naturopathic medicine is a distinct primary health care profession, emphasizing prevention, treatment, and optimal health through the use of therapeutic methods and substances that encourage individuals’ inherent self-healing process. The practice of naturopathic medicine includes modern and traditional, scientific, and empirical methods.”
