Multiple sclerosis (MS) is the leading cause of non-traumatic disability in young American adults. This autoimmune condition is the result of complex genetic and environmental factors that result in an immune system gone awry. The immune system in the person with MS attacks the insulation (myelin) of axons (nerve fibers) in the brain and spinal cord and may even permanently damage the axons themselves. Symptoms may vary greatly from one person to the next and include visual loss, walking problems, incoordination, cognitive difficulty, changes in bladder/bowel function, pain and muscle spasticity. Research has led to the discovery of several drugs that may slow the course of MS for many. In spite
of these advances, many people with MS still suffer from daily symptoms due to
MS.
