Endocannabinoid System
The endocannabinoid system is the name for a series of cell receptors that respond to certain kinds of agonists. Two primary cell receptors make up the ECS, Cannabinoid Receptor 1 (CB1) and Cannabinoid Receptor 2 (CB2). The keys for these receptors are called endocannabinoids.
Cannabidiol (CBD)
Gaining popularity as the primary therapeutic cannabinoid for a variety of diseases, specifically autism as well as epilepsy and other nerve-related conditions, cannabidiol is generally the second-most common cannabinoid found in cannabis, after THC. It is becoming highly sought after despite being nearly bred out of modern cannabis in the hunt for the highest THC strains; many breeders now pride themselves on their CBD-to-THC ratios instead. Traditionally, hemp varieties have varying amounts of CBD but almost no THC.
Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)
THC is the main cannabinoid found in the cannabis plant and is responsible for the majority of the plant’s psychoactive properties. THC has lots of medical benefits including analgesic properties, though perhaps its most defined quality is its tendency to increase appetite. CBD acts as an antagonist to THC, reducing its psychoactive effects.

In last month’s issue, we covered a number of plants that produce healing phytocannabinoids, which are the cannabinoids also produced by the cannabis plant.
In this month’s issue, we will cover other plants that produce healing phytocannabinoids that contain the same type of healing compounds that nourish our endocannabinoid system.
As mentioned last month, these plants contain compounds, which replicate the biological activity of cannabinoids, but have a slightly different structure. These are called cannabimimetic compounds.
