122 RECREATIONAL CANNABIS
In early June I was very excited to cover the NorCal High Times Cannabis Cup, for 2017. For those of you who don’t know, the High Times Cannabis Cup is the most well known cannabis festival. Founded in 1988, by Steven Hager, the High Times Cannabis Cup was originally held each November in Amsterdam but in 2010 began traveling across the US and various places in the world. The event allows judges to sample and vote for their favorite marijuana varieties.
Just days before the event commenced the news broke that the High Times Magazine and Cannabis Cup had been acquired by a group of investors that includes Damian Marley and was led by Adam Levin, the founder of the investment firm Oreva Capital. Reported purchase price was $70 million and I was anxious to see if there would be noticeable changes in their policies and procedures. Not that I was expecting anything special, just interested if anything had been implemented. I noticed nothing but, given the time frame, I was not all that surprised.
The NorCal Cup was held at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds in Santa Rosa, California and spanned most of the outdoor portion of the fairgrounds. Additionally, there was a VIP Lounge in a centrally located building and the musical guests performed throughout the weekend.
