Triumph to be Inducted into Canada’s Walk of Fame Artist Showcase Applications Open for Canadian Music Week 2020 Artist showcase applications are now open for the 2020 edition of Canadian Music Week (CMW), which will take place from May 19-23 in Toronto. HINDS PLAYING CMW 2018 Now in its 38 th year, CMW is Canada’s largest music industry event, bring- ing together the country’s music, media, and entertainment industries. The festival spans five nights of performances, with hundreds of showcasing bands at more than 40 live music ven- ues in downtown Toronto. BreakOut West Bringing Showcases, Awards & Conference to Whitehorse Canadian rock band Triumph is among the group of outstanding Canadians to be inducted into Canada’s Walk of Fame this year. “The Canadi- an power trio Tri- umph stands out as a visionary, uniquely-influential entity among their musical brethren,” Canada’s Walk of Fame says. “Virtuoso musicianship, soaring melodies, and exceptional songs with a positive perspective and outstanding live shows made vocalist/guitarist Rik Emmett, bass guitarist/keyboardist Mike Levine, and vocalist/drummer Gil Moore des- tined for stardom.” The band dominated Canadian arena rock in the ‘70s and ‘80s and, between their 16 albums and DVDs, Triumph has received 25 gold and platinum awards in Canada and the United States. The other inductees to be honoured on Nov. 23, 2019, in Toronto are: actor Will Arnett; actor and children’s entertainer Mr. Dressup; archi- tect Frank Gehry; Olympian Cindy Klassen; hockey player Mark Messier; basketball inventor Dr. James Naismith (posthumous); and business owner Jim Treliving. For more information, go to www.canadaswalkoffame.com. grandson’s “Blood//Water” Wins SOCAN Songwriting Prize The song “Blood// Water” performed by grandson has won the 14 th annual English SOCAN Song- writing Prize. It was written by Canadians Jordan Benjamin (aka grandson) and (L-R): ERIC BAPTISTE, CHESTER KRUPA CARBONE & GRANDSON Chester Krupa Carbone, along with Kevin Hissink, originally of the Netherlands. For winning, Benjamin and his co-writers received the $10,000 cash prize, a Yamaha PSR-S970 keyboard, and a $500 gift card from Long & McQuade. The 10 shortlisted songs were chosen by a panel of industry experts and then the winner was selected by a public online vote. A mirroring competition for songs in French, the Prix de la chanson SOCAN, was also conducted separately. The winner of the Prix de la chanson SOCAN is “On fouette” performed by Tizzo, feat. Western Canada’s annual music industry conference and showcase festival, BreakOut West, is heading to Whitehorse, YT from Oct. 2-6, 2019. It’ll feature a four-day music industry conference with a mix of educational sessions for both musicians and industry profession- als, as well as a large festival with more than 55 showcasing bands and the annual Western Canadian Music Awards. BreakOut West says it’s organizing a “value-centric” confer- ence, bringing together Canadian and international industry delegates with Canadian artists for panels and workshops that will provide workable solutions for growth beyond the region. Among those announced so far are sessions on tour strategies, activating alternative revenue streams, live A&R with music supervisors, and DIY versus traditional label releases. In total, there will be more than 20 panels, workshops, and sessions at the conference.
