Fast Romantics Win SOCAN Songwriting Prize Toronto-based indie rock band Fast Romantics have been voted the winners of the 11 th annual English SOCAN Songwriting Prize for their song “ Julia ,” written by founding band member Matthew Angus . Canadian music fans voted for their favourite from the 10 songs nominated by a panel of music industry experts . Nearly 30,000 votes were cast in this year ’ s English and French competitions , breaking 2015 ’ s record total by almost 33 per cent .
For winning , Fast Romantics receive $ 10,000 from SOCAN , a choice of guitars from Seagull or Godin Guitars , a Yamaha PSR-S970 keyboard , and a $ 500 gift card from Long & McQuade .

Honey Jam 2016 Puts Spotlight on Rising Female Artists Honey Jam , the annual multi-genre music showcase and program for emerging female performers , held its 2016 showcasing concert in August at the Mod Club in Toronto .
This year ’ s performers , chosen from hundreds of auditions , were : Amber J , Aria Royal , Brooke Pastuch , Chanda T . Holmes , ESMA , Fridaee , Haviah Mighty , Jessie & Taylor , Keisha Booker , Madison Galloway , Ramy Zhang , Reeny Smith , Sanae , Stella Rio , and Vanessa Lu . A number of career-building prizes were awarded throughout the evening . Coalition Music ’ s Incubator Program scholarship was awarded to rising Toronto-based R & B and hip-hop artist ESMA . Additionally , Vanessa Lu will receive a free song demo session courtesy of Slaight Music while $ 6,500 worth of Yamaha music equipment is going to Amber J . The artist who will travel to Barbados to perform in November is Fridaee .
