The decision to take that on was
entirely to help advance the wom-
en in rock cause. At the time, it was
a very male-dominated landscape,
and I wanted to help make an im-
pact and dent in that – to help girls
and women of the future. Now,
20-plus years later, I am proud to
say I think we did, and the women
today, who were girls then, had
their sense of possibility expanded
by seeing us up there expressing
ourselves.
CM: Is there anything technical
you’ve been working on lately,
or that you’d like to start work-
ing on in order to further your
bass playing?
MAdM: After a lifetime of playing
a Fender Precision, this expansion
into a Guild semi-hollowbody is
dramatic in that I am considering
non-precision and more textures
that a bass can offer to the world
of soundscapes.
He and I got along really well, and
when he compiled a band for his
solo album Troublizing, he invited
me to play bass and do backups,
and what a pleasure that was. It’s all
about lovely and creative people
that I relate to. That’s the only way I
make any decisions in life, beyond
music.
My adventure in Hole was an ex-
ception. I did not know them, and
they were a concerning bunch with
sad personal loss all around them.
