Every producer has to reinvent himself every three or four years and reinvent their sound , so that ’ s my goal for this year .
CM : What was that first big music moment in your life that created a connection to the keys ? DM : Well , my parents would say that it was when we were in Trinidad visiting my granny and grandpa .

Keys N Krates David Matisse is one third of the Juno-nominated hip-hop-infused EDM group Keys N Krates , whose latest EP is this year ’ s Midnite Mass . He is also the kind of person you go to when you need new music recommendations or just want to hear something fresh . He thrives on the trust and pressure of these sonically-based relationships that stretch back through his days as a music production student , a producer in a hip-hop collective , and as the guy who would show up at clubs during other DJs ' sets , set up his keyboard on a speaker , and start riffing over the music .

My older brother was taking piano at the time and in my family the tradition is when you go to visit relatives , you perform for them . So my older brother was playing songs on the piano for my family and I was four at the time and I think I wanted to get some of the attention , too . As my mom recollects , I guess I went up to the piano and started kind of playing back what he was playing by ear and without knowing how to play the piano .
CM : That desire to perform lives on in Keys N Krates , as the group plays instruments on stage instead of using prerecorded tracks .
