… The 2016 SOCAN Awards were held on June 20 th in Toronto to honour the organization ’ s most accomplished songwriters , composers , film and TV music scorers , lyricists , and music publishers of the past year . Major achievement awards this year went to Hockey Night in Canada theme composer Dolores Claman ( Cultural Impact Award ); Gary Slaight ( Special Achievement Award ); The Weeknd ( International Achievement Award ) and his co-writer Ahmad “ Belly ” Balshe ( Songwriters of the Year ); Alessia Cara ( Breakout Award ); and Johnny Reid ( National Achievement Award ). Early Bird Registration Open for FAI Conference
Early bird registration is now open for the 29 th annual Folk Alliance International Conference . The five-day conference – to be held February 15-19 , DIGGING ROOTS AT FAI 2015 2017 in Kansas City , MO – draws 2,500 registrants from 17 countries to the world ’ s largest gathering of the folk music industry . The discounted early bird rate ends on Aug . 31 , 2016 .

… The Canadian Independent Music Association ( CIMA ) held its second annual CIMA Celebration & Awards Gala . The Sheepdogs collected the Road Gold Award and the Unsung Hero Award went to veteran promoter Richard Flohil . The Industry Builder Award was given to Attic Records Founder Al Mair while CMW Founder Neill Dixon received the CIMA Leadership Award . … Singer-songwriter Safia Nolin has won the prestigious 2016 Prix Félix-Leclerc , which is awarded simultaneously to one artist each from Québec and France . SOCAN is associated with the Prix Félix-Leclerc for the second year in a row , offering a $ 2,500 cash prize .
… The Top 12 artists for Project WILD ( formerly Alberta PEAK Performance Project ) have been announced . The Top 12 artists , in alphabetical order , are : Amy Metcalfe ; Brad Saunders ; Cole Bradley ; Dani Lynn ; Domino ; The Dungarees ; Jamie Woodfin ; Ken Stead ; Midnight Lights ; Shantelle Davidson ; Sykamore ; and Trevor Panczak .
