CM : Lastly for the gearheads , is there any instrument / piece of gear that ’ s a personal favourite at the moment , or that you consider indispensable ?
Burrows : My most indispensable piece of gear is my in-ear monitor system . I was fitted professionally for it way back in 1996 . At first , I used it to be able to properly hear my electronics that were introduced on our 1997 album , Transmission . Later , it became a necessity to save my hearing .
D ’ Oliveira : My Pearl 36-in . professional orchestral bass drum is probably the most used drum in my arsenal . It ’ s an extremely versatile instrument that ’ s able to create a large variance of textures and massive epic sounds that have graced most of the soundtracks I ’ ve created over the last decade .
Humphrey : My laptop . I could play on any kit , but the ability to record and construct ideas , songs , etc . I wouldn ’ t trade my laptop for any piece of gear . radius of your drum kit and you can also use it to trigger bass drum samples , which is great because during a clinic or a performance , if someone wants a beefier sound from the bass drum or a different bass drum sound altogether , I can trigger it . The stereo pair microphone not only catches sound from a 4-ft . radius , but it naturally balances the sound so the cymbals aren ’ t too loud and there ’ s a good sounding snare because it ’ s in line to get the bottom of the snare wire . If you think about the Glyn Johns mic technique , it ’ s catching the floor tom from that same angle , except on the inside of the kit . What ’ s also great is that there ’ s a ton of processing in the other piece – a module that can also take five or six other electronic drum pads or triggers , so you can expand your drum kit . And you can add stereo effects . So , on the video for “ The Forgotten Ones ” I ’ m using a delay . I had an acoustic drum trigger
on one of my drums and was tapping tempo on the rim , so I can basically decide on what delay tempo I want at any time , which allows me to be really free . It [ functions ] as an interface too , so I have access to all of [ the sounds on my computer ] as well .
The other thing is my Fender Marcus Miller Jazz bass . It ’ s a fivestring , American-made bass with a maple neck . I love Marcus Miller ’ s playing style and sound , and when it ’ s in my hands it just transports me to the place that I want to be .
Menow : My favourite piece of equipment is my double pedal , a Pearl Eliminator Redline Twin Pedal-Belt Drive . Although I don ’ t use it much , I love it because I have it set to my groove and tension .
Lander : I have no idea how I functioned without my [ Yamaha ] Manu Katché snare before I had it , especially in a recording setup . It ’ s been on every recording I ’ ve done in the past 12 years and has a very distinct sound . At this point it is part of my signature sound . I couldn ’ t imagine playing a show or recording without it . However , I need to give an honourable mention to my SnareWeight M80 ; a dampening tool that ’ s my secret weapon for great sound .
Lewis : That leads me to think about what pieces of gear inspire me the most , but also help me get the job done . One is the [ Yamaha ] EAD10 electronic acoustic drum module , which I got a year-and-a-half or two years ago . It has a sensor with a stereo pair microphone on it and a trigger you mount on your bass drum . It picks up the sound from a 4-ft .
