Dissecting the Ontario Retail Lottery Results Four Months In

It feels like just yesterday that the Government of Ontario announced that instead of granting unlimited retail cannabis store licenses it would instead implement a temporary cap of 25 licenses while cannabis supply stabilizes. In fact, that announcement was nearly four months ago, on December 13, 2018.

What happened following December 13th was a whirlwind of activity that resulted in arguably the most condensed and frenzied process that has taken place in the Canadian cannabis industry to date. This month we recap that process and look at where things stand today.

Prior to December 13th big and small companies alike were gearing up to apply for retail store licenses when the licensing process was set to open in December, 2018. The December 13th announcement of a lottery system altered the retail landscape that was about to unfold in Ontario tremendously and threw many well laid plans to rest (at least for the time being).
