In a year of debate classes , every student will have practice speaking at least thirty times , if not more from debate competitions and extra practices . As a result , debaters get way ahead of their peers in terms of speaking confidently and intelligibly . Also , debate helps with university applications and essay writing , as debate speeches follow essay structure . Debate is a valuable experience that universities know shows intelligence , grit , and hard work .

What makes debate different from other after-school classes ?
Polls show that speaking in public is most people ’ s number one fear ( second top fear : death ). Debate is even more challenging than public speaking , however , because in a debate , you have to give a speech , and then an opponent is supposed to pick apart your speech . Simultaneously , a judge is evaluating the quality of your arguments and directly comparing the two sides .
And yet , debate often turns out to be most kids ’ favorite after-school class . Why is this ? The first answer is that debate is one of the few classes where the student is the center of attention , where the student gets to experiment and present themselves in an environment where failing is normal and easy to recover from by learning to persevere and trying again next time .
The other reason is that it ’ s fun : it ’ s a sport with rules , winners , judges , prizes . It ’ s also a puzzle : every debate topic is different , and teams need to predict what the other side will say .
Debate is also an opportunity to talk about important issues . Consider that most teenagers are not encouraged to speak on these issues anywhere else . And because debate is challenging , kids learn to respect themselves and their debate peers in a way that makes for lasting friendships .
