Located on the southwest tip of Lake Athabasca , Fort Chipewyan is a perfect place to leave your daily stresses behind and experience the remote beauty , history and culture of one of Alberta ’ s most isolated and northern communities . Established as a trading post in 1788 by the Northwest Trading Company , Fort Chipewyan is Alberta ’ s oldest settlement . So remote is Fort Chipewyan , it can only be accessed by land in the winter on a 280-kilometre road made entirely of snow and ice . On this adventure vacation you will follow the winter road through the unique and amazing landscapes of the boreal forest and sand dunes and travel over frozen rivers , marshes and the vast Peace-Athabasca River Delta . With a bit of luck , you may see hawks , owls , moose , bison and lynx along the way .
