them with God’s love. We often forget that we have been given a ministry
assignment right where we live! We are God’s handiwork, created in Christ
Jesus to do good works, which He prepared in advance for us to do.”
(Ephesians 2:10)
Here are just a few ways you can take advantage of summer to begin to
form relationships in your neighborhood.
• Prayer:
As you walk through your neighborhood, pray for your
neighbors. Pray for God’s will to be accomplished in your neighbor-
hood. Ask God to prepare hearts and open their minds to the Gospel.
Pray for homes that are for sale – that God will move in those hungry
to know Christ or vibrant believers who will join you as a witness.
• Care: Be the initiator in bringing your neighbors together. Summer
is a perfect time for a block party or ice cream social. God has wired
us for relationship! I think you will be surprised with the joy people
experience simply in coming together.
• Share: Share your love for the Lord and how he is working in your
life. You might consider a four to six week Bible Study or begin pray-
ing now about the fall. Many in our church have opened their doors
and invited neighbors in for a very non-threatening opportunity to
walk through the Bible. God loves any step of faith! Be sure to read
Kathy Zimmerman’s testimony (on page 8) of how God worked
through a Bible Study in her neighborhood.
As ambassadors for Christ, we could consider porches as a picture of
God’s grace extended to a dark and needy world. When we welcome peo-
ple into our lives, we invite them to experience love in community and offer
shade from the difficulties of life. As you pour the lemonade, remember
that God loves to pour water on a thirsty land and streams on dry ground
(Isaiah 44:3). As you are refreshed by that cool liquid on a hot summer
day, speak a silent prayer that salvation will spring up around you and that
righteousness will flourish with it (Isaiah 45:8).
