Dear Reader,
Welcome to the spring 2012 edition of Behind the Badge, which
aims to highlight and celebrate the men and women
who keep our streets safe.
As a group, California’s police chiefs are smarter than ever,
and it’s making a difference. A Cal Chiefs survey found that
more than 62 percent have advanced college degrees, and a
large group have law degrees. We interviewed three highly
accomplished chiefs, and each said he believes education has
contributed to the sustained drop in crime.
Communications is a big focus during these challenging times. Inside, hear about the pros, cons and unknowns
about social media from Arcadia Lt. Tom Le Veque, a policing pioneer. We also introduce you to Copbook,
Redlands PD’s innovative intelligence-sharing tool, and showcase Modesto PD’s unique use of Twitter for the
first “virtual ride-along.” Also, Los Angeles Police Department Deputy Chief Jose Perez offers a behind-thescenes look at the successful Occupy LA decampment.
We hope you enjoy the magazine. Please visit our news site at www.calchiefsnews.org or follow Cal Chiefs on
Facebook or Twitter.
Thank you for the critical role you play in making California one of the best and safest places in the world to live,
work and play.
Sincerely,
David L. Maggard
President of the Board
