For example, with the tap of a few buttons on
his touch screen, Snowden can pan and zoom
to get a live view of famous Rodeo Drive, thanks
to some of the near-200 fixed-post cameras that
have been installed throughout Beverly Hills. He
can also monitor and transmit on police radio
frequencies from his iPhone.
“Technology is making everyone’s job in law
enforcement much easier,” Snowden said. “We
are years removed from having to strictly rely on
the observation of officers. We now have what we
call ‘passive monitors’ to help us do our job.”
Like other law enforcement agencies, the Beverly
Hills PD has been wracked by budget woes.
With 140 sworn officers three years ago, the
agency has been whacked to 124 sworn officers
(with money for up to 127) following a painful
budget hit of $3.5 million. Some programs were
eliminated or reduced, including DARE.
Still, tough times haven’t prevented the Beverly
Hills PD from becoming --- and remaining --- a
