MEMBERSHIP
Membership Update
It’s that time of year for dues renewals. We just wanted to remind members
that Chief dues were increased 5% this year as they are usually increased
by a very small percentage every two years and our last increase was for the
2016/2017 year. Cal Chiefs made a change to retired chiefs’ dues beginning
this year and is now offering retired members who have been retired
members in good standing for 20 years be recognized with free lifetime
membership. Dues for those chiefs who retired less than 20 years ago or
haven’t been paying their dues each year, have been raised from $25 to $50
a year. Each year, the list of retired chiefs with free lifetime membership
will increase as additional chiefs reach the 20-year retired membership
milestone. Associate member dues will remain at $145 for this fiscal year.
Highlights of Cal Chiefs’ accomplishments this past year on behalf of our members include:
• Worked for months on a compromise to SB 54, the
Sanctuary State bill, to lessen its negative impact on our
agencies and those in our community and keep intact
our ability to work with our federal law enforcement
partners on Task Forces. • Launched Class 1 of our newly created Executive
Leadership Institute at Drucker, a two-week intensive
leadership development program in partnership with
the Drucker School of Management on the Claremont
Graduate University Campus.
• Worked with the Attorney General’s Office to ensure
their guidelines for agencies to implement SB 54
contained the exclusions and exemptions we had
championed in the legislation. • Covered the good works and successful programs of our
members through the California Police Chief magazine
which is mailed to members twice a year.
• In concert with law enforcement stakeholders and
the retail industry, helped draft and introduce the
Reducing Crime and Keeping California Safe Act of
2018 to counter the impacts of Props. 47 and 57 which is
currently gathering signatures.
• Presented 13 training programs for chiefs, seconds and
chiefs’ executive assistants including launching our new
Changing the Narrative “What’s Your Story” summit, in
addition to presenting an outstanding Annual Training
Symposium in Long Beach and a sold-out Women
Leaders in Law Enforcement Symposium in Monterey.
• Continued to provide 30 minutes of free legal counsel to
all chiefs, now with Jim Touchstone at Jones & Mayer,
and continued to provide chiefs with free access to crisis
consulting with Bill Rams, our media consultant.
Since the last membership update we have had
the pleasure of welcoming 31 new chiefs and
33 new associate members. The names and
agencies are listed next page.
Please help us welcome them all! ■
