Livestock Showcase Submitted by Daniel Moreno Every year during the summer, students from our chapter have an opportunity to raise and sell livestock animals for our local county fair. Students spend countless hours on the farm training their animals to show at the fair. To help the students understand how the competitions would be, our chapter holds a Livestock Show to showcase the work of the students to their parents, peers, and a judge from the industry. Students receive critique and are asked questions about their livestock as they would be in the show ring. The Livestock Show helps the students understand how the competition will run, as well as a chance to win a trophy as a grand prize for first place. The Livestock Show is a great way to showcase their hard work from throughout the summer! Merced FFA Partnering with Industry Submitted by Amacia Martinez-Howell The Merced FFA chapter has partnered with Merced Ewing Irrigation and Landscape Supply, to test out a new product. Holganix is an organic bionutritional supplement that the horticulture class has decided to use, as well as studying the effects it had, on their plants. The students understand that the ingredients in this solution are completely plant based, and have found that the results of this product are similar to that of the natural forest environment, which relies on decomposed debris from trees and other organisms, to provide nutrients to the soil. They have also found that less water is needed to keep the plants well and alive when using the supplement. This experiment has allowed the chapter to work with their community, testing products that are used in the industry. They are exploring new and innovative aspects to the future of agriculture, and allowing students the opportunity to learn by doing. Five days, over 450 members, and thousands of memories made; Superior Region Chapter Officer Leadership Conference was a major success. From August 21-25, Superior Region Officers, as well as various sectional officers and representatives, hosted COLC where we challenged officer teams from schools throughout the region to “Suit Up For Service.” In addition to various team building activities, like a volleyball and softball tournament, members attended a number of workshops, including stage presence, mixers, and a workshop specific to their office. Each chapter was assigned a topic to create a skit; Live Oak FFA with “FFA’s Funniest Home Videos,” Wheatland FFA with “Farmer’s Only,” and Placer FFA with “Pitch Perfect” were announced the winners of the competition. Dinner, was something many students and teachers would not have expected. The Superior Region officer team mimicked an experience unlike any other from a national conference: The Poverty Dinner from Washington Leadership Conference. This dinner opened the eyes of FFA members to the levels of poverty and need for service using stories and situations that could happen in real life. Following dinner National Officer Candidate, Haley Warner, lead each group of students in reflections, asking each chapter officer team to create a service statement for the year. COLC was a big hit. Respectfully Submitted, Hailey Traynham, Superior Region Reporter • Los Banos FFA New Beginnings Submitted by Taylor Torongo The Los Banos FFA Chapter hosted our treasured first meeting of the year. Our first meeting was a time to connect and mingle with not only our chapter, but with the Pacheco FFA Chapter as well.
