SOCAL is Southern Region’s version of a Chapter Officer Leadership Conference (COLC). The conference is designed for the leaders of our region to help them gain the leadership skills they need to be successful leaders, but unlike other COLCs the conference isn’t just for chapter officers it’s for all members, that is why we call it the SOCAL leadership conference instead of the Southern Region COLC. The conference launched with the State FFA Officers presenting their workshops on the importance of the FFA and success in the members’ communities and at schools. The Regional Officers then held their own workshops, providing the members useful tips on conducting icebreakers, time management, professionalism, and first impressions. The region officers then ended the conference with a bit of a laugh by presenting the Southern Region theme skit which included loose steers, sour milk, and ended with a little graduation for the characters! Overall everyone had a blast at SOCAL and left the conference with a smile on their face, and a new goal, to find their combination to unlock their potential! Submitted By: Jose Varela Continued Woodland-Pioneer FFA Thank A Farmer Submitted by Chapter Reporter The Woodland-Pioneer FFA chapter dedicates itself to come up with new ideas to embark on new tasks within their chapter and the community. As for the 2014-2015 year, the officer team started a new tradition to express their gratitude towards farmers around the local community. As a team, they would prepare a small gift; they would personally deliver to their home or workplace and compliment the farmer for their hard work and labor they put within their toil, for they drive themselves to maintain a strong business and continue to grow as agriculturists. Their great deal of efforts and contributions to the FFA deserves recognition and profound appreciation. Woodland-Pioneer FFA demonstrates great gratitude towards the leaders of agriculture and continues to give recognition. Everrett Alvarez FFA Eagle Produce Store Open for Business Submitted by Edgar Becerra, Chapter Reporter The brand new opening of the Eagle Produce Store was not an easy task. After years of countless meetings with the district and a mountain of paper work, the first project was finally able to launch. Five students took on the first project which surrounded the sale of poinsettias for the holiday season. This unique program is the only one of its kind offered across the state of California. Up until this day, Everett Alvarez High school is the only school with a produce store where the students receive all profit and take complete control of the store. The students have put to work their marketing skills learned in their agriculture business class offered by the school’s AG department. The essential life skills the students will learn if they decide to take on a project with the store will advance their skills in managing agricultural and business administration. The program is unique in its way it gives students the chance to grow into potential leaders in the agriculture industry. California FFANEWS • Spring 2015
